Barry Gray was an American radio personality, often referred to as "the father of talk radio." His late-night New York City radio talk show was carried by WOR radio and then later by WMCA.

This episode was divided into two segments. The first deals with Congress and its interest in creating a bill to ban professional boxing in the wake of many boxers having died in the ring...nine since 1953.

Guest is John F. X. Condon, publicity director of boxing at Madison Square Garden, and congressman Simon who is behind the bill to forever abolish boxing.

The last 8 minutes of this archived tape provides a rare personal glimpse of Boris Karloff and Peter Lorre. Karloff discusses the origins of his Frankenstein role and how he got the part, his early acting experiences going all the way back to 1910, his English accent, and leading parts in plays such as Charlie's Aunt.

Peter Lorre discusses his screen persona as one who has been typecast playing villains, but which has provided him a good living as an actor. His latest release, The Raven is mentioned as well as his friendship with Vincent Price. Lorre discusses his association with the world of Art Paintings and today’s challenges finding good works of art to purchase, and speculations.


Barry Gray returned to WMCA in 1950, and stayed there for 39 years, refining the talk show format still utilized today. During the 1960s, he was in the odd position of having an 11 p.m.-1 a.m. late-night talk show on a station otherwise dominated by Top 40 music and the youth-targeted "Good Guys" disc jockey campaign. But for teenagers who kept their radios on into the night, Gray's show was a window into the high-brow New York culture of the 1940s and 1950s.

Note: In Merv Griffin's 1980 Autobiography "MERV" he states:
"Of all the remarkable guests on my NBC talk show, one appearance remains in my mind as the most memorable, Montgomery Clift." He did very few televisions interviews in his life, and arrived at the studio, intoxicated, while Griffin was already on the air. However, when Merv introduced him, Clift walked on stage like he had pushed a button inside his brain that brought self-control. Montgomery Clift gave Merv Griffin, that afternoon, a lucid, fascinating interview including anecdotes about his relationship with Marilyn Monroe. By the end of the interview they both shook hands. Monty waved to the audience and strode offstage...collapsing against a wall the moment he was off camera.

Two additional episodes were later produced, "Style of the 70's," and "Rush To Reality," both hosted by Ben Gazzara and added, subsequently, to  re-issues of the series which were syndicated in the 1960's and 1970's airing  in New York (WINS), Boston (WBZ), Philadelphia (KYW), Baltimore (WJZ), Fort Wayne (WOWO), Chicago (WIND), San Francisco (KPIX), and Los Angeles (KFWB).

An NBC half hour documentary series which premiered at 2:30pm on April 1, 1956 under the title OUTLOOK. The program initially featured news headlines, and multiple stories at greater length, including filmed reports. Narration and Commentary by Chet Huntley. Beginning December 22, 1957 the format was changed to provide in-depth exploration of a single subject. From 1959 to 1961 the program was aired on Sunday afternoon at 5:30pm. On January 12, 1962 the series moved to prime-time, Friday nights 10:30pm with the same format, Huntley interviewing news personalities and exploring topical issues in depth. During its seven year run the series had the following titles:
OUTLOOK, CHET HUNTLEY...REPORTING, TIME:PRESENT...CHET HUNTLEY REPORTING, and beginning September 25, 1960, CHET HUNTLEY REPORTING.

October 1, 1962-May 22, 1992. Johnny Carson, host of NBC's network late-night "Tonight Show" reigned for 30 unprecedented years...five times the combined tenure of Steve Allen, and Jack Paar. Carson was impervious to competition, including efforts to dethrone him by Les Crane, Joey Bishop, Merv Griffin, Dick Cavett, Jack Paar, Pat Sajak, Joan Rivers, and Arsenio Hall. Sadly, very few complete "Tonight Show" broadcasts survive during Johnny Carson's first ten years of broadcasting. Around 1965, through the early 1970's, oldest tapes were first erased systematically by orders from myopic NBC executives, to be recycled for purposes of saving money. Ironically, in many cases, these older master tapes were too brittle, and portended probable drop-outs for re-use after being erased. Subsequently blank after being erased, these older questionable master 2" Quad tapes were either sparingly used or never used again for recording new programming and eventually were discarded. Saving thousands of dollars at the time (wiping master tapes for potential re-use) resulted in losing millions of dollars by NBC in today's marketplace, and more importantly wiping thousands of historic TONIGHT SHOW broadcasts, which contain precious personal anecdotes from political, show business, and sports icons of the past.

Wonderful little know anecdotes by both guests. Sarah Karloff, daughter of Boris confirmed to Phil Gries that after listening to her father discusses numerous family remembrances she was hearing them for the first time.

Peter Lorre sets the record straight on numerous incidents that he has been associated with including his relationship with Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels, including his sudden departure from Germany, not completing his Caspar Hauser film...Brecht and Joyce being the greatest writers of their time, and telling Gardner that he doesn't like to look at himself on the screen. 
Peter confesses he would have liked to have played Sir Winston Churchill on the screen but for the fact that he can't speak English very well.

     September 21, 1962 - September 10, 1965

Jack Paar elected to pursue a three year NBC series in prime time soon after stepping down as host of THE TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JACK PAAR (1957-1962). These broadcasts took on the form of a variety / talk show format. Each telecast opened with a Paar monologue. Also shown from time to time were personal home movies shot by Jack on various trips by the Paar family to Africa, Russia, and Europe.Jack's daughter, Randy Paar would often assist her dad narrating these films.  

Appearing with Jack were many of his old regulars from the TONIGHT SHOW including Alexander King, Oscar Levant and Jonathan Winters. This 10pm Friday prime time slot attracted many notable guests, including Richard Nixon, Barry Goldwater and Ted Kennedy. Also, given exposure were many young and veteran entertainers, Liza Minnelli, Judy Garland, Ethel Merman, Peggy Lee, and stand-up comedians, among them, Woody Allen, Bill Cosby, Godfrey Cambridge, Jackie Vernon, Mike Nichols & Elaine May, Burns & Schreiber, and Dick Gregory. 

Impact appearances occurred introducing footage of The Beatles, prior to the group appearing on The Ed Sullivan Show, and a young Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali), singing and spewing poetry with Jack and Liberace. 

After three years (one and a half years less than his tenure on THE TONIGHT SHOW), Jack Paar called it quits and would prematurely retire from the business with the exception of  producing and starring in a handful of Specials for NBC and accepting one brief return to regular television, for nine months, hosting an ABC late night talk show, JACK PAAR TONITE in 1973).
