"About 60 white citizens marched in Selma Alabama today in support of negro efforts to register. They were geared. At least one was struck in the head, one was tripped, and all were engulfed by a cloud of white smoke when an automobile stalled at an intersection and three white men tried to restart it. When the marchers reached the town square a crowd of about 300 negroes and 200 whites were there to watch. a spokesman for the marchers read a petition which stated: 'We as white citizens of Alabama have come to Selma today to tell the nation that there are white people in Alabama who will speak out about the events that have recently occurred.' The statements also urged Governor George Wallace of Alabama to see to it that all open and subtle intimidations of persons seeking to register to vote be removed. At about that same time Governor Wallace, in Montgomery Alabama, put his foot down on a planned Negro march tomorrow from Selma to Montgomery, the state capitol. The negroes say they will march anyway. Governor Wallace said there will ne no march, and stated he had told Colonel Al Lingo, head of the Highway Patrol, to use whatever measures are necessary to prevent a march. Wallace said the march was planned by the same persons who had caused weeks of disorderly interruptions of the normal function of government in and around the Dallas area. The march will not and cannot be tolerated, he stated." NOTE: One commercial (No Doze tablets) is included in this audio air check.
