TEX AND JINX Radio & Television BROADCAST HISTORY: April 22, 1946- February 27, 1959. WEAF (WNBC, WRCA), New York weekdays at 8:30 A.M. until 1954; at 1:00pm,1954-1955; then at 6:30 and 10:35pm until July 31, 1958, moving briefly to WOR, broadcasting at 2:15pm. In addition to the Kollmars (Dorothy Kilgallen and husband Richard Kollmar) and the Fitzgeralds (Pegeen and husband Ed Fitzgerald), another well-recognized New York couple, newlyweds Tex McCrary and Jinx Falkenburg, added their own bread-and-bacon banter to the local airwaves between 1946 and 1959. Their gabfest, initially Hi Jinx but later revised to Tex and Jinx, was beamed over WEAF which was subsequently re-lettered WNBC and later WRCA. In limited doses, the flagship outlet of the National Broadcasting Company transmitted Meet Tex and Jinx to the whole country during 1947 and 1948. Tex and Jinx devoted most of their airtime to lofty and noble concepts, visitors and sidebars. Tex and Jinx [on WEAF-WNBC-WRCA] were interviewing Bernard Baruch, Margaret Truman, or Ethel Waters…. McCrary built the show on the assumption that the early morning audience was not stupid, as programmers generally assumed; that people in general had fresher minds and were more open to serious topics at the beginning of the day.” Their joint radio venture began in April 1946 just 10 months following their nuptials (June 10, 1945). Launched as a breakfast feature, the series later shifted to afternoons and finally into the evening hours before departing the ether a dozen years afterward. They were branded by one journalist “Mr. Brains and Mrs. Beauty.” In early 1947 NBC put them on its television network as a portion of a Sunday evening quarter-hour dubbed Bristol-Myers Tele-Varieties. “The McCrarys were naturals for TV,” wrote a reviewer, “with their combination of friendly chatter, interviews, and features.” That summer the web awarded them an exclusive Sunday night half-hour format under the appellation At Home with Tex and Jinx. A decade later, in the 1957-58 season, the duo hosted a daytime NBC-TV showcase, The Tex and Jinx Show. When hepatitis sidetracked Falkenburg in 1958 from their broadcast commitments, McCrary carried on solo on their radio show for another couple of years. In the 1980s, however, the couple separated, remaining on genial terms. McCrary died in New York on July 29, 2003 and Falkenburg expired just 29 days later in the same city, on August 27, 2003. To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the General Foods Corporation has taken over the NBC and CBS networks from 8:00 to 9:30 P.M. to present highlights from the musical productions of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, 2nd. The shows to be represented in this review of eleven years of musical-comedy achievement are: Oklahoma, Carousel, Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, and Me and Juliet. Clarence Francis, chairman of General Foods, opens the program which is hosted by Mary Martin. The first musical number, "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'," sung by Gordon MacRae, comes from "Oklahoma!", Rodgers and Hammerstein's first musical collaboration together. Jack Benny then appears in a sketch in which he recalls buying a ticket to "Carousel" for only six dollars and sixty cents. Then John Raitt sings "You're a Queer One, Julie Jordan," and is joined by Jan Clayton in singing "If I Loved You"; both songs are from "Carousel." After Martin sings "It Might as Well Be Spring," from the score to the movie "State Fair," Edgar Bergen and his dummy, Charlie McCarthy, introduce Bill Hayes and Janice Rule in "You Are Never Away," from the musical "Allegro." The following segment is an excerpt from Groucho Marx's "You Bet Your Life" television series, in which he interviews Rodgers and Hammerstein. Then Martin and Ezio Pinza perform "Some Enchanted Evening," and Martin sings "A Wonderful Guy." Both pieces are from the musical "South Pacific." Ed Sullivan then introduces excerpts from "The King and I," which feature Patricia Morison singing "Getting to Know You," with dancing by Michiko, as well as Yul Brynner performing "A Puzzlement." Jack Benny returns to showcase Tony Martin in "The Big Black Giant" and Rosemary Clooney in "No Other Love"; both pieces are from "Me and Juliet." The program ends with MacRae and Florence Henderson performing a duet from "Oklahoma!" titled "People Will Say We're in Love."

Regulars included Jack Haskell, Cliff Norton, Jill Corey, Shirley Harmer, and dancers Ken Spaulding and Diane Sinclair, and Skitch Henderson, musical director. Haskell and Norton worked with Garroway on his first series, "Garroway At Large." With the exception of two broadcasts (June 18 and 25 (final show) all of the Dave Garroway show air checks in the Archival Television Audio, Inc. archive are not complete shows. They contain just the songs the performers (Regulars) and guest stars performed. These edited down airchecks run approximately 15 minutes and are mostly comprised of SONGS. There are exceptions such as when Art Carney visited hearing interchanges with him and Dave Garroway. Those interested in acquiring information as to the tile of the songs (when known) for a specific show and when not detailed, and who sang these songs would have to be monitored again, available upon request. NOTE: The Dave Garroway show auditioned for female singers and there was a premium on time and studio space. There was no piano and Skitch Henderson, the music director, had to accompany the young hopefuls on a celeste, an instrument which despite its similarity to a piano is very difficult to sing with. Jill was very nervous during the hustle and bustle of all this, but Garroway reassured her and she won the audition. She later became the top female singer on the "Dave Garroway Show." MOST of the listed Dave Garroway Shows archived in the collection of ATA do not exist in any other known museum, private collection or at NBC. There does exist 10 Dave Garroway Show kinescopes that are archived at two museums, Paley Center for Media, and at UCLA Film & TV Museum. It must be noted that kinescope optical sound tracks are "noisy" and much inferior to these mastered 1/4" reel to reel audio tapes which were recorded off the air direct line at 15IPS. Also, note, that these recordings were made in studio (15ips), by Mahlon Fox Audio Engineer of this series creating a personal audio copy for himself (later acquired by Phil Gries). These broadcasts aired over 70 years ago and the tapes are very fragile. However, they play back well and the sound when originally recorded and recently monitored by Gries is supreme representing these shows.

From 1959 to 1963 it was seen Wednesday evenings and was titled "The Kraft Music Hall." Regulars included Frank Gallop and the Ray Charles Singers. After his final weekly June 12, 1963 broadcast Perry Como appeared in scores of specials, beginning October 3, 1963, airing on NBC, CBS & ABC, and concluding on December 6, 1986. In the 1980s, however, the couple separated, remaining on genial terms. McCrary died in New York on July 29, 2003 and Falkenburg expired just 29 days later in the same city, on August 27, 2003. TEX AND JINX Radio & Television BROADCAST HISTORY: April 22, 1946- February 27, 1959. WEAF (WNBC, WRCA), New York weekdays at 8:30 A.M. until 1954; at 1:00pm,1954-1955; then at 6:30 and 10:35pm until July 31, 1958, moving briefly to WOR, broadcasting at 2:15pm. In addition to the Kollmars (Dorothy Kilgallen and husband Richard Kollmar) and the Fitzgeralds (Pegeen and husband Ed Fitzgerald), another well-recognized New York couple, newlyweds Tex McCrary and Jinx Falkenburg, added their own bread-and-bacon banter to the local airwaves between 1946 and 1959. Their gabfest, initially Hi Jinx but later revised to Tex and Jinx, was beamed over WEAF which was subsequently re-lettered WNBC and later WRCA. October 31, 1955 - June 13, 1958 Broadcast Live this ambitious TV adaptation of the 1818 novel, FRANKESTEIN, written by English author Mary Shelley, was televised in Color on NBC TV, February 5, 1957, starring Tom Tyron, Christine White, Vic Perrin & Primo Carnera as the Monster. While 55 references in WIKIPEDA of actors playing the role of the Monster (stage, film, TV), over the years, there is not mention of the characterization and version performed by Primo Carnera. This peerless COMPLETE AUDIO AIR CHECK broadcast of FRNKENSTEIN was restored by Phil Gries from an original 1/4" reel to reel audio tape discovered and obtained by archivist scholar Gary Rutkowski (www.savetv.tv). Matinee Theater was an American anthology series that aired on NBC during the Golden Age of Television, from October 31, 1955,[ to June 27, 1958 (including last two weeks of re-runs). The series was broadcast on NBC television daily from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time, was usually broadcast LIVE and most of the time in color. Its live dramas were presented with minimal sets and costumes. During its three-year series run there were 7000 different performers employed, and hundreds of talented writers and directors who navigated its peerless television run, using 4,200 sets, 210,000 props, and 15,000 costumes. Host for this series was John Conti. When it was broadcast, Matinee Theater was the most heavily promoted regularly scheduled daytime program on U.S. television, part of the network's effort to "provide quality 'adult' entertainment" in daytime programming. The series ended in 1958 due to its high budget, much higher than any other daytime program in television. A few of the later episodes were preserved on color film for later rerun syndication under different titles. Almost all of the 590 original and 81 re-run episodes broadcast have been wiped, destroyed, or are not known to exist any longer in any broadcast form (audio or kinescope, or video). UCLA Film & TV has 20 different kinescopes in their archive, most not accessible. The Library of Congress has only TWO kinescopes in their archive, each on separate negative audio tracks, and separate 16mm Negative Kinescopes. However in 1986 when NBC TV donated 18,600 of their extant kinescopes (1948-1975) to the LOC, their was notated at that time SEVEN separate kinescopes (separate 16mm films and corresponding Negative Optical Sound tracks), for the broadcast dates, Oct. 31, 1955, Nov. 28, 1955, Nov. 29, 1955, Dec. 20, 1955, April 20, 1956, May 3, 1956 & Dec. 10, 1956. These LOST CBS broadcasts represent an unprecedented one complete week, sign on to sign off, September 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 1957 (130 hours on 130 8 & 1/2" diameter discs with a capacity to record 32 minutes per side (side one and side two had the potential capacity to record 64 minutes). Wall-To-Wall music is the order of the day as Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra host this CBS-TV musical special. This special has a "mystery guest" which turns out to be Bob Hope. The Edsel Show special replaced the Ed Sullivan Show for this night with the same sponsor. It was one of the year's most successful programs, though it failed to increase the popularity of the Edsel automobile. It has been credited as Bing Crosby's real television breakthrough, setting the pattern for his many television specials to come. He subsequently signed a lucrative contract with ABC under which he would produce two specials per year. Ending theme for tonight's show: "On The Sunny Side Of The Street." Narrated by Warren Hull. Apparently the repartee between Paar & Levant were in some questionable taste...some humor at the expense of the mentally and emotionally disturbed. Oscar Levant, having himself been in sanitariums for the mentally ill would always quip with sharp humor about conditions at these facilities as well as his own neurosis and foibles. There would be ten future guest appearances by Oscar Levant on the JACK PAAR TONIGHT SHOW, as well as the JACK PAAR PROGRAM and one special JACK PAAR PRESENTS. Video Tape could easily be erased and was used for new program recordings...retained briefly for a re-run and then erased or discarded. Legend has it that even Jack Paar himself hired a junk man to come to his home garage and paid to have JACK PAAR TONIGHT SHOW recordings discarded (reels of kinescopes and video tapes) that were now cluttering up his space. During this era in television history archiving television programming was not a primary concern or vision, and considered an arcane pursuit. ARCHIVAL TELEVISION AUDIO, INC. retains over 70 complete and excerpt JACK PAAR TONIGHT SHOW air checks (34 hours), including the complete Jack Paar's first anniversary telecast which was broadcast live from Havana Cuba (June 28, 1958). These originally recorded off the air pristine sound direct line 1/4" reel to reel audio tracks, recorded at the time of the original broadcasts, represent the only broadcast record of a "lost" visual telecast. ATA is the largest single repository (one collection), in the United Sates of Jack Paar Tonight Shows recordings. The combined archives of The Library of Congress, Paley Center for Media, and UCLA Film & Television retain a composite total of 13 hours of representative JACK PAAR TONIGHT SHOW broadcasts excerpts...none complete. July 29, 1957 - March 30, 1962 Hugh Downs opens the show and mentions tonight's guests. First appearance of Jack Benny as a guest with Paar who praises Benny and thanks him for the time when Jack had the opportunity to work for 18 weeks replacing Benny on the radio. Many topics are covered during this very informal interview. Jack mentions the previous night when Mickey Rooney was intoxicated on the Paar show...praise for Red Skelton, his love of the violin (took lessons from age 6 years of age to age 15), Benny kids about Frank Remley a best friend who is always intoxicated, and praises Jack Paar for his ability to do The Tonight Show five nights a week. He says that Paar is a good straight man, comedian and listens to his guests. There is a segment where Paar shows movies of celebrity homes in Hollywood, including those belonging to Bob Hope, Harold Lloyd, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford, Dinah and George Montgomery, Paar gives comment when seeing the clips. Sterling Hayden is introduced and discusses his recent voyage with his four children, ages 11, 10, 9, and 7 and others (total of seven children and thirteen adults) on his ship to Tahiti, leaving Hollywood California avoiding a court ordered injunction not to sail. Hayden discusses the circumstances and why he wanted to get away from Hollywood which does not suit him for numerous reasons. Jackie Gleason's career is reviewed and he performs the "Sid, Old Kid" number from his Broadway musical "Take Me Along." Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews present "My Fair Lady" songs. Rex: "I'm an Ordinary Man," Julie: "Just You Wait." Shelley Berman, and Mike Nichols and Elaine May, comedians who were introduced in the Fifties, lampoon psychiatry. Dick Van Dyke pantomimes dance crazes of the decade. His partner for this comedy sequence is Maria Karnilova. Betty Comden and Adolph Green satirize cultural developments of the Fifties. Suzy Parker represents the American woman in "The Creature," a film sequence created by Richard Avedon. Charles and Ray Eames also have contributed film features. Television and Movies are highlighted in clips from outstanding productions, including memorable the Mary Martin-Ethel Merman TV Show produced by Leland Hayward, who also has produced tonight's show. Excerpts from records illustrate music of the fifties. News Events of the decade are recalled by eyewitnesses. The voices of these men are heard: Arthur Godfrey, sports stars Roy Campanella, and Roger Bannister, sea captain Kurt Carlsen, submarine camp;ain William Anderson, explorer Edmund Hillary. Eric Sevareid provides commentary during the show, which consists of live, tape, and film elements.
