Order1971-03-20, KFI, ?? min.
Scott Ellsworth's guest is arranger, pianist, composer Marty Patche. March 30, 1970 - April 1, 1972 KFI 640 Los Angeles AM Radio. 162 individual broadcast Audio Air Checks survive. A goldmine of originally recorded live interviews with the greats from the Jazz and Big Band era, with integrated recorded samples of their work played throughout the broadcast. Scott Ellsworth was the creator and on-air host of the popular radio program, "SCOTT'S PLACE." It aired live on KFI-AM in Los Angeles, six times a week, from midnight to 4:00 am (MARCH 30, 1970 - APRIL 1, 1972). Over 500 unique broadcasts featured jazz and big band music, interspersed with live interviews with musicians, singers, composers, conductors, arrangers, band leaders, writers, music producers, dealers & promoters. These guest artists would drop by the studio after midnight, quite often following work or performing, and would bring some of their favorite records or personal recordings to the show to play for Scott and his audience. They would talk about their career, reminiscing with anecdotes...their love of jazz and big band music. Interviews averaged in length from one hour to four hours. Scott was exceptional in his ability to draw together some of the finest artists and musicians representing the history of jazz music...many who were not known by name to the general public, but well know to the jazz community dating back to the 1920's, 30's,40's, and 50's. The SCOTT'S PLACE theme music, "Have A Nice Day," played by Count Basie & his band, was composed and arranged by Sammy Nestico specifically for Scott, in July 1971. It was used permanently as Scott's theme music beginning in November 1971. Most of the lesser known legendary jazz artists who frequented the show did few, if any, talk shows in their life, making these candid conversations so valued since most of these individuals are now deceased. Guests included: Matty Matlock, Jess Stacey, Thelma Carpenter, Mercer Ellington, Lex Baxter, Nellie Lutcher, Billy May, George Van Eps, Shorty "Clarence " Sherock, Bobby Bryant, Dick Nash, Nick Fatool, Abraham Lincoln, Rollie Bondock, Ray Sherman, Irv Cottler, Lew McCleary, Kai Winding, Jack Coon, Pat Williams, Duke Ellington, Melba Liston, Conte Condoli, Benny Golson, Mariah McPartland, Johnny Mandel, Johnny Guarnieri, Vince Darosa, Stan Kenton, Fred Gerry, Gerry McKenzie, Pete Dailey, Robert Enevolsen, Jack Marshall, Clair Fisher, Howard Rumsey, John Klemmer, Maurice Harris, Johnny Best, Ted Curson, Dave Garroway, Jimmy Smith, Gus Bivona, Johnny Pate, Harold Land, Joe Marsala, Ralph Carmichael, Clair Fisher, Mundell Lowe, Dave Cavanaugh, Teddy Buckner, Al Rinker, Floyd Huddleston, George Auld, Sonny Burke, Bill Bacin, Paul Tanner, Lorenzo Flennoy, Bill Berry Dave Dexter, Blue Mitchelle, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Benny Powell, Lee Young, Joe Comfort, David Rose, Arnold Ross, Earl Palmer, Jimmy Witherspoon, Benjamin "Scatman" Crothers, Bill Evans, Cat Anderson (William Alonzo), Al Aarons, Ronnie Lang, Frank Beach, Joe Pass, Jimmy Jones, Van Alexander, Peanuts Hucko, Panama "David" Francis, Marty Patche, Louis Bellson, Sam Most, Don Menza Billy Eckstine, Sam Donahue, Nellie Lutcher (second interview), Teddy Edwards, Alvin Stoller, Marshall Royal, Terry Gibbs, Louis Jordan, Ulysses Livingstone, Dr. Bill MacPherson, Al McKibbon, John E. July 5, 1970-July 8, 1979. A recurring weekly 13 episode summer series, "Evening at Pops" presents the Boston Pops Orchestra, under the direction of Arthur Fiedler (until his death in 1979). Announcer is William Pierce. Pop and rock share the limelight as The New Seekers perform favorites such as "Day By Day" and "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing." The British-Australian group formed by former Seekers' member Keith Polger split after disbandment of The Seekers in 1969. Members of The New Seekers consist of Eve Graham, Lyn Paul, Peter Doyle, Monty Kristian, and Paul Layton. Highlights: The New Seekers introduce themselves in the group, and sing: "What Have They Done to my Song," "Never Ending Love For You," "Blowing in the Wind," "Day By Day," "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing," "When I Was Small," and a medley from the rock opera, "Tommy." Highlights: Arthur Fiedler and Boston Pops Orchestra: "Overture to The Bartered Bride," "Consider Yourself," "I'll Never Fall in Love Again," "Polka from Schweder," "Saber Dance," "Semper Fidelis." NOTE: The beginning 19 minutes of this audio air check master 1/4" reel to reel tape had many opening issues and challenges. It had deteriorated with slight sections of oxide removed from the base. Painstakingly, it was necessary to inch along during playback with manual pressured Q-Tips soaked in alcohol placed on the heads, after the tape was baked for 12 hours at 130 degrees to remove moisture. Gratefully, most of the compromised audio tape's opening 19 minutes of the broadcast was saved by archivist Phil Gries. There were a few aberrations during this opening segment of tape including occasional clicks, varied volume levels, and varied tone, which were greatly equalized, improved and rectified in the final mix. The results are gratifying, having mostly saved this air check in its almost entirety. It represents a one-of-a-kind not accessible broadcast record anywhere else. In the process of attempting to save as much of this tape as possible five minutes of audio, deteriorated beyond repair, had to be eliminated. Five of these six minutes, not salvageable, included The New Seekers singing "Fire & Rain," and "My Sweet Love."

In 1977 Phil Donahue shifted his base of operations to Chicago from Dayton, Ohio and the show's title became known simply as "Donahue," a one-hour show usually devoted to a single topic or guest. The guest is Doris Day. A complete one hour interview, the only one that Doris Day ever did on a television talk show. Doris Day reflects on the many films she has made. Most times cast in films as a "goody - goody" character. Doris admits that she never had a weight problem...discusses her current biography publication, "Doris Day: Her Own Story" which is a very candid and surprising to audiences revealed many dark moments in her life. Doris talks about her first marriage at 17 to Albert Paul Jorden who had a vicious temper and would beat Doris, at the time of her pregnancy. She states that they really did not know one another at all. Her second marriage to George Weidler is discussed which lasted only eight months...another unsuccessful relationship. Doris advocates living with someone before marriage...getting to really know the other person.,. Doris Day relates her relationship with her third husband, Marty Melcher, married in 1951 and lasting seventeen years until his death in 1968, the last year she ever made a movie. She states she still loves Marty even though he led to her bankruptcy after his death squandering her money through an unscrupulous attorney. Doris states that money was never a priority in her life, and relates a story revolving her son Terry Melcher one day after the death of her husband. Doris Day confirms that she loved making films, has had a very lovely life till now, and is grateful for her health. She mentions her favorite songs. and states that she regrets never taking good advice from Les Brown. Doris describes her affair with Jack Carson when making her first film. More revelations from Doris Day's book, "Doris Day: Her Own Story" is discussed. Doris admits that when she has been married she never was promiscuous. She reveals her feelings when working with Kirk Douglas (a joyless experience working with him), her relationship with Ronald Reagan, and circumstances related to the Charles Manson murders, and the real relationship Manson had with her son Terry Melcher. Doris confirms that at this time she feels great. Now prays a lot. Not a church goer and if the right circumstance existed would marry for a fourth time. Phone calls are received and Doris Day answers questions. Favorite male co-stars and why...James Cagney, Rock Hudson, Jack Carson, Gordon MacRae, Clark Gable, James Garner. Never felt close to Cary Grant, who was a loner and quiet on the set. Loved working with Frank Sinatra. Doris mentions that her TV series will be re-run\. Doris Day's current love is in the audience and Barry Comden takes a bow. More remembrances, including first dancing for audiences when Doris was five years old. She admits that most important to her was to be happily married and states that she loves keeping house. Other revelations: Doris admits she use to be a heavy cigarette smoker...best to live together before marriage...her love of animals...and influenced to write her autobiography by Jacqueline Susann who told her to share her complex past life.
