James Meredith, who became Republican candidate to run against Adam Clayton Powell in the New York congressional race, drops out. Walter Cronkite announces: "Two Senate Committees begin joint hearings tomorrow on proposals to develop an electric powered automobile to help ease the country's air pollution crises. Maine Democratic Senator Edmund Muskie will be co-chairman of the hearings and will talk about the urgency of the problem." Ed Muskie: "We know air pollution causes death. We know long-term low-level exposure to air pollution is unhealthy. We know air pollution destroys crops and foliage. We know that it damages property, And we know it is going to be a more serious problem in the future than in the past. With this background knowledge, we also know that the automobile is the single biggest contributor to air pollution. With this combination of facts, we have no choice but to work on the problem. And this electric car is one of the options we are exploring." Walter Cronkite: "When the time comes when electric cars are common, it will be one of the most dramatic changes in transportation since the development of the first gasoline automobile." Robert Schakne reports on the history of the electric car's past developments going back to 1916 and it's current development. Eric Sevareid commentary on the French Election and Charles de Gaulle. Note: At the conclusion of this broadcast, Walter Cronkite does not state the date of this program. A rare ending. "And That's The Way It Is. This is Walter Cronkite saying goodnight."
