In this hour, reporter Nicholas Pileggi and Luigi Barzini (author of "The Italians") explore the roots, structure, and harsh code of that mystical (and say many Italian-Americans, mythical group, the Mafia.)
Why was Columbo Shot? Because Pileggi says, his much-publicized Italian-American Civil Rights League violated the mob's code of silence. "The sight itself was unthinkable to Columbo's peers- a Mafia leader standing before 50,000 people, guarded by the police." The Supreme Court rules the death penalty unconstitutional. Approximately 600 men currently on death row will be spared. President Nixon to hold first news conference in 13 months.
In San Francisco, FBI agents storm a hijacked Pacific Southwest Airlines jet and kill the two men who were holding 86 passengers hostage. One passenger Stanley Carter of Quebec was killed in the crossfire. Also aboard the plane was actor Victor Sen Yung who portrayed Hop Sing on the TV series Bonanza, but best known for his portrayal of Jimmy Chan in the Charlie Chan films.
Democratic National Convention in Miami Beach Convention Center set to begin July 10th. McGovern and other Democratic presidential candidates appear on "Meet The Press."
